Apartment fire contained by sprinkler system (Tampa, FL)

A Tampa apartment building was briefly evacuated overnight after a fire. According to Tampa Fire Rescue, a couch located in a room in a second-floor apartment caught fire. Crews were able to quickly put the fire out after the sprinkler system was activated. No injuries were reported.

Sprinkler system extinguishes a 12th floor apartment fire (Flint, MI)

A small fire displaced some residents in downtown Flint according to Flint Fire Battalion Chief Joe Morrison. The fire department's Morrison said someone was cooking on a hot plate on the 12th floor when the sprinkler system was set off. The fire was put out by sprinklers. No one was injured.

Sprinklers make the difference in middle school fire (Oak Forest, IL)


An electronic device might have been the cause of the fire. "If it wasn't for the building's sprinkler system, this place would still be burning," said Oak Forest Fire Lieutenant Jack Janozik. Custodians were inside the school at the time of the fire, but all evacuated safely. The school's sprinkler system was essential in snuffing out the flames, and saving the thousands of documents stored in the room. "That saved this building from burning down," Janozik said.

Highrise fire controlled by sprinkler system (Hamilton, Ontario)


Fire crews were called after a fire began in the garbage chute. The building’s sprinkler system controlled the blaze before fire crews arrived on scene. No one was injured and the fire caused very little damage to the building.

An early morning fire at a University of Arizona dormitory was held in check by fire sprinkler systems, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman said. More than 100 students were evacuating the building when crews arrived. No one was injured.

Sprinklers controlled kitchen fire at residential and commercial building (Iowa City, IA)

The main body of the fire, contained to the underside of a kitchen counter, was controlled by the sprinkler system. The rest of the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes.  Though occupants were evacuated as a result of the fire, the release said there were no injuries and the fire did not leave the commercial portion of the building.

Sprinkler system contains warehouse fire (North Bergen, NJ)

North Bergen Fire and Rescue put out a warehouse fire early this morning that was contained by the building’s own sprinkler system, officials said.  The fire was contained and a search of the building confirmed there were no people inside.

Fire onboard a commuter ferry was extinguished by sprinkler system (Vancouver, BC)

A fire in the bow thruster compartment of a commuter ferry erupted on a sailing bound for Duke Point. The fire suppression system put out the blaze and the sprinklers were activated on the car decks.  No one was injured in the fire.

Sprinkler system contains residential garage fire (West Dundee, IL)

A husband and wife were home at about 8:47 p.m. when a smoke detector went off.  Investigating, they discovered the attached garage was engulfed in flames.  Sprinklers saved a home from what it could have been total destruction, according to West Dundee Fire Chief Randy Freise.  The couple got out safely and no one was injured.

Fire sprinklers control apartment fire at senior living center (Fresno, CA)

A fire broke out in a third-floor apartment at a senior living center. Fire officials said the fire was caused when a tenant smoked a cigarette indoors.  The building's sprinkler system controlled the fire before firefighters arrived.

Fire at manufacturing plant was controlled by sprinkler system (Janesville, WI)

The blaze started when some wood caught on fire during a manufacturing process that makes rubber flooring. The fire sprinkler system was activated and kept the fire in check until crews arrived to put the fire out.  People inside the building were able to get out safely.

Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at high school (Chillicothe, IL)

East Peoria Chief William Darin said no one was hurt and things went smoothly after a small fire was discovered in a men's restroom at East Peoria Community High School.  A hose was brought in, but Assistance Chief John Knapp said the sprinkler system put out the fire in the restroom.  "The sprinkler and fire alarm system worked perfectly," Darin said, "and the students were already outside when we arrived, so that was good."

Fire at independent living high-rise contained by sprinklers (Saginaw Township, MI)

Saginaw Township Fire Department Chief Jim Peterson said the fire started in a couch in an independent living high-rise. Peterson said the building’s sprinkler system helped suppress the fire and contained it to the room where it started, though there was water damage to some other rooms. “The suppression system put out the majority of the fire,” he said.

Sprinklers make the difference in high school fire (Flagler County, FL)

The Flagler County Sheriff's Office arrested a 17-year-old high school student on a felony arson charge after a fire in a school bathroom. The sprinkler system activated because of a fire in the restroom. There were approximately 50 students in the cafeteria at the time the fire. No one was injured.

A fire started by a plumber’s torch damaged attic space and a vacant suite in a medical office building, according to the Palm Springs Fire Department. He said the building’s sprinkler system went off quickly, alerting the fire department and saving 90 percent of the building.

A building sprinkler system quickly extinguished a fire at a fiberglass component manufacturing plant. The fire began in a room where fiberglass and resin are sprayed into molds. The cause of the fire is believed to have been spontaneous combustion from a buildup of fiberglass and resin in a spray booth.

St. Cloud Deputy Fire Chief Dean Wrobbel says a sprinkler system saved an apartment building from going up in flames early this morning. Wrobbel says when they got there, they found a mattress on fire in a second floor hallway. The sprinkler system had been activated, which kept the fire contained.

Sprinkler system contains fire at strip mall (Ogden, UT)

Ogden firefighters credited a sprinkler system for keeping a strip mall fire from becoming a major conflagration. "The sprinkler system did activate and extinguish the majority of the fire," Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bauman said. While three people were evacuated from Beto's, none was injured, Bauman said. "This is another example of the benefits of sprinkler systems in businesses," he added. "The early activation of the business' sprinkler system played a huge role [in preventing the] spread of the fire."

Sprinklers suppress fire at University of New Hampshire marketplace (Durham, NH)

A fire broke out at a University of New Hampshire marketplace. Firefighters who arrived at the scene found smoke and steam coming from the building. Inside, the sprinkler system had already been activated. “One sprinkler had been activated and suppressed the fire. The origin was in the area of the cheese cooler,” Powers said.

Sprinkler system extinguishes fire at high-rise apartment building (Boise, ID)


Boise firefighters responded with a full high-rise response after an alarm from the 15th floor of the Grove Hotel. The alarm and sprinklers were apparently activated by a candle burning in a Halloween decoration left outside one of the residential condominiums. The hotel suffered no fire damage. The hotel was briefly evacuated with only a minor disruption to ongoing business.

Fire at dry cleaners contained by sprinkler system (Jackson, WY)

A fiberglass cart filled with rags spontaneously combusted in one of the truck bays at dry cleaners. When firefighters reached the building, there wasn’t much of a fire. A few spots were still were smoldering, but the sprinklers had doused the truck bay pretty well, Fire Marshal Kathy Clay said. “The sprinkler system did its job,” she said.

A small fire occurred at the Hampton Inn. Luckily, the building’s sprinkler system took care of the fire. According to Lt. David Bell, the fire department is unsure if it was a dryer malfunction or the clothes in the dryer that caused the incident.

Sprinklers contain fire at grocery store (Atlanta, GA)


Firefighters said the sprinkler system prevented a late night fire from spreading the to rest of the grocery store. Investigators were able to determine that the blaze was started by an electrical malfunction in the charger cord for a battery operated pallet jack in the loading dock area. The employees and customers were evacuated and there were no reported injuries.

Investigators believe a fire was intentionally set in an apartment building. When fire crews responded to the call they discovered a burning pile of rubbish in the hallway. The sprinkler system in the three-story apartment contained the fire. About 30 occupants were evacuated and no injuries reported.

Fire contained by sprinklers at engineered wood products manufacturer (Medford, OR)

Sparks from a grinding operation started a fire that ignited in two connected sawdust bins at Boise Cascade. "Really the initial knockdown happened with the automatic sprinkler system," said Arlen Blenkush, District No. 3 battalion chief. The fire was contained to the inside of the bins and did not damage the structure's exterior.

Sprinkler system extinguishes apartment cooking fire (Leavenworth, KS)

A Leavenworth Fire Department official says a fire at an apartment Monday night could have been a lot more serious if it hadn’t been for a sprinkler system. Water from the sprinklers extinguished the flames from a cooking fire at Abernathy Lofts before firefighters arrived. It also was reported that a woman who had fallen asleep in the apartment was awakened when the sprinklers went off, according to Assistant Fire Chief Mark Nietzke. “This is a good example of what a sprinkler system can do,” he said.

Fire at gun range controlled by sprinkler system (Las Vegas, NV)

The Clark County Fire Department was called to a fire at a gun range late Friday night. Officials said two men were doing maintenance welding work in a gun range inside the building, when air filtering material caught fire. Building sprinklers helped keep the fire in check while firefighters quickly extinguished remaining hot spots.

Sprinkler system contains electrical fire at restaurant (Hampton, NH)

Firefighters responded to a fire at a sports lounge and restaurant. The blaze was determined to have been caused by an electrical malfunction in the jukebox, according to Hampton Fire Chief Chris Silver. "The sprinkler system saved the building," Silver said. "It did exactly what it was supposed to do and contained it right in the area of origin."

Fire at manufacturing plant contained by sprinkler system (Sullivan, MO)

“This is a clear example of how sprinkler systems can help save property,” said Sullivan fire chief, Rich White, following an early morning fire at Sullivan Precision Metal Finishing. “The sprinkler system inside the manufacturing plant had contained the fire to the specific area. Our firefighters were able to finish extinguishing the fire and then provided overhaul/cleanup of the area, along with checking for any fire extensions.”

Off-campus apartment fire contained by sprinkler system (Ettrick, VA)

The blaze began in one of the off-campus apartments that was being used for storage. The building's sprinkler system helped keep the fire from spreading to other units. Fire officials said the stove in the apartment was accidently turned on and lit items on the stove on fire. No injuries were reported and the students who live in the building were able to return to their apartments within hours of the fire.
